Meet Mary
I’m a self-taught, Adelaide-based oil painter. Painting has been a part of my life for more than 17 years, and my love of the Australian landscape began early. I spent much of my childhood travelling around Australia, often sketching the landscapes and people I came encountered and those experiences still influence the way I paint today.
I started out with a strong focus on realism but over time I’ve become more interested in loosening up my brushwork and letting the paint play a bigger part of the finished painting. I still enjoy the challenge of realism, but I also want my paintings to have a sense of movement and feeling.
The ocean continues to be a constant source of inspiration for me because it’s never quite the same. Light, colour and movement are always changing the atmosphere and even a familiar scene can feel completely different one day to the next.
My paintings have been exhibited nationally and are held in private collections in Australia and internationally. I have also been fortunate to have been selected as a finalist in several Australian art prizes. I continue to learn, experiment and develop my practice through large scale works, commissions and collaborative projects.
